Volunteer Opportunities

Why Tutoring Matters:

Tutoring changes lives, particularly for adults in the Fredericksburg region who face challenges with reading and writing. When you volunteer your time, you can make a profound difference. Your personalized support and encouragement can significantly improve a student's literacy skills, boosting their confidence and unlocking new opportunities. This dedication cultivates a lifelong love of learning and empowers individuals to achieve their dreams. Together, we can strengthen our community and help individuals build a brighter future, one student at a time.

Volunteer Roles

Reading Partner

Many learners come with a specific goal in mind such as to prepare for tests like a driver’s license, citizenship, or college entrance, or for help  to get a job or advance in their job.  If you are creative, open to understanding the needs of the learner and are willing to research resources and ideas that will meet their specific needs, you’re perfect for the role. We ask for a minimum commitment of at least six months, although you may find a connection and meet for a time beyond that. Our hope is that you find a very rewarding relationship of mutual respect and learning.

Time Commitment: approximately 1.5 hour sessions, once or twice per week. You will meet with your partner at a public place and time that works with both of you.

Small Group English Language Tutor

Teaching a small class or group of adult learners may sound intimidating, but it is a fun, engaging way to provide an emotionally safe environment for learners to get accustomed to small classes and to practice speaking English in a group. And no, you do not need to be able to speak another language! If you have a good sense of humor, enjoy people from other cultures, and are a generally patient person, you can do it!

Time Commitment: 2 hours per week for the entire length of the course. Small groups typically will meet at a public library.

Computer Basics Partner

Helping a learner with computer literacy is easier than it may sound. Computer basics partners guide learners through fundamental technology skills, from mouse and keyboard basics to navigating files and using basic applications. Their goal is to build confidence and make computers less intimidating, enabling learners to use computers effectively for work, personal tasks, and staying connected. If you can navigate basic skills on a computer and have the patience to help someone who may have little experience with computers, you can be a partner.

Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week for a few sessions. You will meet with your partner at a public place and time that works with both of you.

Volunteer Orientation and Training

We will be offering a volunteer orientation session and subsequent tutor training sessions nearer to our upcoming program launch. Stay tuned for exact dates.
